When the COVID-19 pandemic began, many teachers and students used online technologies for the first time. Online learning was a solution for education to continue during a difficult time as a way to continue teaching and learning. Online and synchronous or on-site learning are combined in hybrid learning. Parts of the curriculum are taught online while other activities are taught in a classroom setting with a hybrid course design.

There are numerous advantages to hybrid learning, which is why it has become such a popular method of instruction. These advantages include:

Better Student Engagement

Some students have grown up in an age of smartphones, tablets, and other technological devices, and they are likely already accustomed to working and learning with the aid of technology.

Incorporating technology into the learning environment enables teachers to communicate with students and share course material in a safe and secure environment.

Variability for Learners

The sheer variety of digital content in the typical online course component — text, video, quizzing, and interactives — gives students more agency over their learning and allows them to engage with course material in ways that work best for them.

Some students would rather read text than watch videos. Others are the inverse. Others may begin by self-quizzing the course content. All approaches are valid if they help students learn. Students now have more control over their education thanks to the digital medium.

Flexibility for Teachers

Teachers' reach extends beyond classroom sessions and office hours thanks to educational technology. Grading that is automated frees up time to connect with students in more personal and impactful ways. Teachers can now use technology to access more pedagogical tools to engage and challenge more students.

Teachers' flexible options make it easier for them to assist students in learning the material. Flexibility in learning and studying is essential in the learning process of any student.

Personalization and Connection

Students in hybrid courses can interact with their peers outside of class hours to support and teach one another in ways that all students can participate in.

Students benefit from this because it gives them the freedom to direct their own learning and follow their curiosity. When students have the chance to work together with their peers, hybrid learning may help them understand the subject matter better.

Easy and Quick Access

Online materials are typically less expensive than physical textbooks, and in the case of open educational resources, students can access them immediately. It also saves time because if a student misses an in-class lesson, there is an online alternative. If they plan to catch up with a teacher after work, they can arrive at the meeting prepared.

Teachers have been employing a variety of models, so these teaching strategies are not a one-size-fits-all answer. Examples of hybrid learning include, but are not limited to:

Online Laboratory

Digital tools are used in an online lab method. The course materials are made available to students via a learning management system or another platform chosen by the teacher.

Classroom Flipping

Students in a flipped classroom spend time at home or away from a physical classroom learning at their own pace. After that, the class will meet in person to talk with their teacher, ask questions, and finish their homework based on what they learned online.

Multimodal Education

Students who enrol in a course that is multimodal or hybrid-flexible (HyFlex) have the option of attending synchronous face-to-face sessions in person, usually in a traditional classroom, or completing course assignments online without actually being present in class. Students benefit from this in both helping them balance their personal lives and their schoolwork. That is why it is such a well-liked teaching strategy, especially among adults who are employed.

This method is excellent for encouraging students to take responsibility for their learning while also allowing them flexibility. They can talk with their peers and teachers in a communal learning environment about what confuses them or where they need more help with concepts or assignments by meeting face-to-face. These options make it appealing to teachers who want to reach a broader range of students. There is something for everyone when it comes to learning methods.
